Wifi Hotspots are public locations which offer high speed
wireless internet connnections. You can find many wifi hotspots
in Ireland in:
Pubs
Departure Lounges of airports
Hotels, Bed and Breakfasts
Petrol Stations
Restaurants, coffee shops and cafes
Wifi signals are their most strongest in these
locations, so if you want a good internet connection - make
sure you're in the hotspot area!
Most of the hotspots in Ireland require for you
to pay to use their services. Providers such as BT Openzone,
o2, Bitbuzz and Eircom allow both subscriptions and pay as
you access.
So what do you need to get started?
Simply put, you will require a laptop or pocket
pc which is wireless enabled. (Many laptops come with Intel
Centrino - wireless built in. Or you can buy a wifi access
card) .
You'll also need a web browser (Internet Explorer,
Mozilla, Firefox, Opera...and many more available) and a subscription
or a pay as you go voucher for accessing the hotspot.
You should be able to buy scratchcards where
the hotspot is located and these can cost approximately €10.
Connecting to the hotspot
In order for you to connect your wifi connection
must be switched on. Generally Windows XP will automatically
find a hotspot and let you know. It does this by popping up
a message on the task bar saying that a wireless network is
connected.
If you're running an older version of Windows,
you may need to read your wireless documentation in order
to connect to the web.
Once connected you'll be able to download e-mails,
surf the internet, listen to on-line radio stations, in fact,
do almost anything you'd do at home on a broadband connection!
Just don't spill that cup of coffee onto the
laptop keyboard!
Happy surfing!
