Irish firm to launch VoIP over Wifi
Dublin-based firm, Talktelecom may soon offer cheaper calls following the completion of a trial which saw a VoIP service transmitted over a Wi-Fi network.According to ElectricNews.net, the two month trial tested the ability for calls to be made across the internet using specially-equipped XDA smartphones and HP personal digital assistants (PDAs).
Talktelecom has said that the success of the trial could end up with users of Wifi enabled phones saving up to 90% on call charges.
VoIp is a recent success story. On a normal broadband connection, users make phone calls over the internet and find they make savings when compared to traditional fixed line calls.
Talktelcoms system adds a mobile element to VoIP by bridging the gap between the users broadband connection and the mobile phone. As long as the phone is within a Wi-fi access point, it is effectively an extension to a fixed line VoIP system.
The firm expects to start rolling the service in the coming months and expects to officially launch a subscription service by the end of June 2005
"The rapid development of wireless technology, coupled with consumers' increased acceptance and understanding of Wi-Fi and VoIP, has led Irish customers to demand these new features," said Jonathan Mills, CEO with Talktelecom. "The latest model handsets and mobile phones now include Wi-Fi capabilities, but making all of these technologies interact seamlessly has not been easy. However, our trials in Dublin have proven that they now can."
