City wide wifi network for Cork

Smart Telecom, as part of the agreement with Cork City Council, has launched a new Wi-Fi network throughout Cork City.

The new network is believed to be the first citywide high-speed Wi-Fi network in Europe.

The MeshHopper service is the first publicly accessible metropolitan area wireless network in the country. Spanning a 1.5 sq kilometre area of the city center the network will be accessible by the public via credit card on any wireless compatible device such as laptops and PDAs.

Initially the service will be free, however, users are expected to pay using their credit card.

Oisin Fanning, CEO of Smart Telecom, says that he is delighted that Smart Telecom has been chosen to spearhead this important technological development in the Cork Region.

"Smart Telecom is already a well established player in the Irish telecommunications market and specifically in the Cork area. We are currently engaged in significant broadband projects in Cork and have offices in Carrigtwohill in Co. Cork. We are in an excellent position to handle the roll out of this extensive WiFi project on behalf of Cork City Council. We are delighted that Smart Telecom has been chosen as the winning tender applicant for this project, over five other competitors. We believe that securing this contract is further testament that Smart Telecom will be a force to be reckoned with in the telecommunications market in 2005."
