Ireland lags in broadband stakes
Irish firms are lagging behind the rest of the EU on broadband internet access. The EuroStat survey puts Ireland third from the bottom of an EU league table of 19 member states.
It said only 32% of Irish companies have the high-speed internet link, compared to the EU average of 53% and a high of 80% in Denmark. The lack of high speed internet is hampering companies growth.
Communications Minister Noel Dempsey warned yesterday that the Government will intervene in the broadband market if nationwide access is not improved.
Speaking at the National Broadband Conference in Galway, the Minister said: "I want to make it clear to the industry that I am prepared to intervene in the broadband market. I will have no alternative but to examine all available options to resolve this difficulty. I will intervene on an operator-neutral basis in the market to promote competition and choice for the Irish consumer"
